Introduction to the project

From March 22, Seville hosts at the Castillo de San Jorge an exhibition on contemporary crafts, which has a total of 55 national and international pieces of European cradle.this initiative, organized by Sevilla City Office and the Contemporary Association of Arts and Crafts, is a pioneer in Spain and is driven by the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftmanship.

It is a foundation whose mission is to defend and value the work of the best artisans in Europe so that with its momentum Seville is placed, from the third week of March, in the center of the high craftsmanship of the European continent.

It is about making visible the excellent Sevillian, Spanish and European artisan workshops, bringing them closer to the new generations with a look daughter of their time. With the same roots but aesthetics that are growing and are being created in the heat of the new times. Other materials are incorporated because other uses are required. However, the love for a job well done, neat, exquisite, remains intact.

The artisan sector has an enormous potential for cultural, labor and economic wealth in a city like Seville where there is so much tradition to drink from and so much capacity to create and recreate. The commitment to craftsmanship is the commitment to the beauty and wealth of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Contemporary Association of Arts and Crafts

Organization

The Contemporary Association of Arts and Crafts is a non-profit organization that seeks to protect and develop craft workshops in Spain in order to revitalize the small manufacturing industry, which has been a source of work and wealth throughout history.

The “Masters of the Future” exhibition, organized by the association in collaboration with the Michelangelo Foundation and BeCraft, aims to promote the revival of arts and crafts through the creative vision of today’s world. And Seville is the setting for this exhibition. A unique and magical city due to its historic past of exchange with America and Europe, its wealth of contemporary craftsmanship and its deep-rooted religious and secular traditions.

“Masters of the Future” becomes a hotbed of artisan mastery and has as its precedent the “Next of Europe” exhibition in Venice in 2022. The exhibition is an essential project to save the knowledge accumulated over so many centuries of working with different materials and is a boost for the development of the craft workshops of the 21st century, which are today laboratories of sustainability, creativity, culture and work.

Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftmanship (Suiza)

Colaboration

The Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Artisan Crafts is a non-profit organization that promotes contemporary crafts for a more humane, inclusive and sustainable future. Through its program, the foundation focuses on communicating the value of applied arts, teaching craft skills to new generations and applying technology and design in the sector.

The Contemporary Arts and Crafts Association collaborates with the foundation and shares its philosophy of championing both ancestral knowledge and new creativity in the applied arts. The Michelangelo Foundation has organized the biennial “Homo Faber Event” in Venice, which showcased a careful selection of the best contemporary craftsmanship.
It has also created the digital platform “Homo Faber Guide” which brings together workshops from all over Europe and the Association has created its own platform “España Artesana” in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture.

The Michelangelo Foundation also has teaching projects that include training scholarships for young apprentices in master craftsmen’s workshops and summer schools, and the Association collaborates in the development of these projects. The transmission of the knowledge of the traditional masters to the young people of today, who in turn bring a fresh, dynamic and forward-looking approach to the workshops, is the key to the success of this promising cultural and social movement. We hope that “Masters of the Future” will inspire many to do so.

BeCraft “Naturaleza Creativa” en Sevilla

Colaboration

The BeCraft association, which promotes applied arts in Belgium, has collaborated with the Michelangelo Foundation on several exhibitions, including “Masters of the Future”. In fact, nine of the artists participating in this exhibition are members of BeCraft.

The association defends Belgian artistic tradition and heritage, but also focuses on supporting and promoting current artistic creation. BeCraft organizes the annual “Tremplin” exhibition, a competition for students from art schools in Wallonia and Brussels, and collaborates in international exhibitions and fairs to encourage artistic exchanges. The association also has its own gallery, La Galerie, where member artists can exhibit their creations. BeCraft seeks to promote cultural exchanges and encourage emulation in the applied arts.

The participation of BeCraft artisans in “Masters of the Future” thus creates a bridge of transmission between the different arts, their forms and modes of expression both through the ages and across cultures and nationalities.
